The Period of Transition, also known as the Era of Good Feelings, was a time of great change and growth in the United States. In Volume V of Edward Channing's monumental A History of the United States - the six-volume series covering the history of the United States – he outlines the beginnings of the period (post-War of 1812) which lasted until the mid-1800s. During this time, the U.S. experienced rapid industrialization, urbanization, and territorial expansion. The country underwent a process of modernization, as new technologies and transportation systems were introduced, and the economy shifted from agriculture to industry. The Period of Transition was also marked by significant social and political changes. The abolitionist movement, which sought to end slavery, gained momentum, and tensions over the issue of slavery and states' rights intensified.
