Date: 3 Oct. 2013YE Bookstore invites you to join a seminar for German students, where art historian Tamara Zlobina will explain Ukrainian feministic art in the context of post-Soviet gender order. The event will take place on 3 October. Beginning at 17:00. Tamara Zlobina will make a brief review of the contemporary period in the history of Ukrainian art from the viewpoint of post-Soviet gender order. The listeners will see how the artistic representation of woman evolved from the early 1990s, when painters Maryna Skugariova and Valeria Trubina captured the drama of geopolitical transformation, to the 2000s and 2010s, with painters from various generations (Vlada Ralko, Oksana Chepelyk, Alevtyna Kakhidze, Masha Shubina, Alina Kopytsia, Anna Zviahintseva, Alina Kleitman et al.) focus on woman’s body and experiences. In 2002 the researcher Oksana Kis summarised the transformations in gender order and described woman’s new gender models, replacing the conventional Soviet-time “working mother”: “the Keeper of the Hearth” and “Barbie.” The painters express their dissatisfaction with these dominant gender models in their own, individual ways: by depicting woman as deceived and deprived of the freedom of speech or travel; or showing various resistance strategies. Since the presentation is meant for an international audience, the speaker will also focus on the connections between text and context and the peculiarities of acceptance/ rejection and understanding/ misunderstanding of women’s or feminist art in Ukraine and abroad.
