Date: 12 Dec. 2013YE Bookstore, Ukrainian Week and the Czech Centre in Kyiv are honoured to invite you to the meeting in the framework of the project “European Expertise: the Czech Republic” on Thursday, 12 December. Beginning at 18:30. Discussion topic: “Czech expertise in overcoming the legacy of totalitarianism.” The meeting will take part with the participation of Pavel ???ek and Patrik Ko?icki, experts on the study of totalitarian regimes and crimes of communism. Pavel ???ek is a Czech academic and government official, the first director (2008-10) of the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes, the Czech government agency and research institute tasked with investigation of the crimes of the Communist regime in Czechoslovakia. In 1993 he began working for the Office for the Documentation and the Investigation of the Crimes of Communism, where he was appointed deputy director in 1998. In 1999-2006 he was senior research fellow at the Institute of Contemporary History at the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. He was a member of the Czech Television Council in 2001-03. Since April 2013 ???ek has been working in the HR administration under the deputy defence minister of the Czech Republic. Patrik Ko?icki holds a degree in philosophy from Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia. In 2000-03 he worked for the NGO People in Need, participating in humanitarian missions to Kosovo, Chechnya, Afghanistan, and Serbia. In 2003-06 he led the department for the restoration of documents at Nation’s Memory Institute in Slovakia. In 2004-07 Ko?icki was deputy editor and editor of Nation’s Memory Quarterly. In 2008 he was appointed director of the Secretariat at the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes (the Czech Republic). Since September 2013 Ko?icki has been working in the government of the Czech Republic (member of the Ethic Committee for recognition of members of the anti-communist resistance and opposition.
